Marissa (Apprentice LA): How to Bring a Team Down

Let me just say Sunday television is terrible now that football season is over. Aside from that, I happened to watch the latest episode of The Apprentice LA and could not wait to see Marissa get fired.

Here are the reasons I would’ve fired her.

  • A lack of resourcefulness.

You’re never going to always get your way. You’re never going to have ideal situations. You’re never going to have the budget. You’re never going to have enough man power. Despite all that, you have to work with what you’re given.

If your supervisor says no to an idea for whatever reason, you have to adjust the boundaries of your thought process to reflect those reasons and keep going. The bigger the organization, the better you have to be at this.

In fact, not only is this a good survival skill, it’s a good skill to have period. Because you’re forced to think differently, chances are good you’ll come up with better, more creative solutions to the problem.

Marissa continued to plead her case despite getting shot down multiple times. Instead of using her time to come up with a different solution, she convinced herself she was right. Which leads me to my next item.

  • Not willing to let go.

This could not have been more evident than in the Board Room. I don’t know how many times she interrupted Mr. Trump and her other team members arguing the “quality” of her Chicken in Street marketing brilliance. If the answer is no, accept it and move on. I refer back to the first point.

I wish she could have seen the affect she had on the team overall. I don’t care if you think your idea would’ve worked. What’s more important? Getting your idea implemented or winning the challenge? Keeping a positive team spirit or validating your idea as being right.

  • Being way too self-centered and neglecting the team overall.

Hello. I know you’re trying to impress Mr. Trump and make yourself look good, but don’t forget you are on a team. Keep in mind your actions and attitude affect how the team functions. Watch the episode. Can you see the difference in cohesion between your team and the other team?

The lack of unity on your team was your fault. How many times did you call your Project Manager? How many times did you bad mouth the overall idea in favor of yours? What negativity were you sub-consciously spreading to those working with you?

Remember, it’s not just about you.
