Jethro Was Right

I’m a micro-manager. It sucks. I can’t be if I intend to have a successful life on earth and in ministry. Right now I find myself with so many things to do that it is extremely overwhelming. It’s hard to keep track of what needs to get done and it’s hard to do anything well.

Which has led me to my current real-life conclusion about ministry (and even leadership in general) . . . you have to invest time and energy in building a team. Here’s a recent quote from a friend . . .

I’m willing to get involved to the extent you’re willing to let me.

Being a micro-manager and not trusting people to do the job well, I tend to do everything myself or hover over the people doing things for me. Bad Alex. The solution is exactly what Jethro suggested to Moses in Exodus 18:13-26.

Build a team. Appoint capable leaders and handle only the hard stuff. I have to get over the fact that I don’t trust people. I have to empower people. I have to take the time to train them to do the job well.

In some ways I should spend more time teaching others how to do the job than doing the job myself. Luckily, I’m going to have the chance to practice this with two different teams. It’ll be a good learning experience.

I want everyone on the team to be as involved as they want to be. I don’t want to be the person putting a lid on another person. Now comes the task of identifying strengths, weaknesses, and who is capable and who is not.
